CreatureCourtCast #3: the Mean Streets of Aufleur

  • Posted on June 24, 2010 at 10:58 pm

In which I talk about the construction of my fantasy city, why I particularly like fantasy with cities in it, the inspiration I drew from a trip to Rome, and the perils of mapmaking. I also read a section from a later chapter of the book (though edited out the worst spoilers) which shows off a bit of the city and includes a fight scene, to balance out all the chat about frocks in the previous ep!

Apologies for the mangled pronounciation of ‘chimaera’ by the way – this is the peril of learning one’s vocab from books! I do know it’s pronounced with a hard ‘ch’ but I only learned this after about 15 years of saying it ‘sh’ in my head and old habits die hard. In the interests of the public right to know I actually had to stop the recording and figure out how the hell I should pronounce ‘Diamagne’ (trouble with madeyuppy names & words is sometimes you don’t figure out how to say them until you have to) until I finally twigged – same way you say Charlemagne, duh!

Happy listening to all. I think I’ll do one more of these before the end of the release month – will take suggestions and requests for the final reading!

Book Plates!

  • Posted on June 23, 2010 at 6:27 pm

The book plates have landed!

These were designed for me by the marvellous and multi-talented Rowena Cory Daniells (whose own trilogy King Rolen’s Kin is due out from Solaris in a month or so) – I like particularly that it reflects the colours and style of my Creature Court website, but of course also the black cat who represents Ashiol, one of Power and Majesty’s many anti-heroes.

If anyone would like a signed book plate to personalise their copy of Power and Majesty, and/or for a friend, or if you have a use for a larger number of bookplates – like if you work for a bookshop – please send me an email at, or DM me on Twitter at @tansyrr (apparently you can’t DM me unless I follow you, so email may be best option for most) to let me know how many you need/what names to sign them to if any, and also a postal address.

Power and Majesty Updates

On the Voyager website they have a slightly more extended sample from the book – fair warning, though, it cuts off with far less regard to a proper stopping place, so might leave readers more frustrated than when they started!

The good news is that for many of you the wait is coming to an end. I’ve had a couple of reports from people who pre-ordered copies of the book that it has come into stock in their mainland-chain-bookstore-of-choice. And of course Hobartians have been able to purchase the book from The Hobart Bookshop since Thursday – but nowhere else! This will all change shortly I hope, though I have signed a lot of stock for Chris & Janet at the Hobart Bookshop, so if you want to pick up a signed copy that’s still a good place to go.

No word yet on which is the best option for overseas readers to order through. Both the Book Depository and Fishpond have listings for Power and Majesty, though neither seem to have actual stock yet. If anyone does successfully order the book from a country other than Australia or New Zealand, let me know how you did it and whether it’s a recommended service!

The launch went very well – booksellers, author, and many of the guests were happy with it! I have blogged about it in more detail here, but in short – it was a fun evening, the children looked gorgeous and so many of my nearest and dearest turned up to launch the book in style. Goodness, am I going to have to do this every six months? (heh, good problem to have, I know)

I expect to have a new CreatureCourtCast up later this week – my voice is still recovering!
